Zeitgeist Today

“Gender fluidity” is the new term my 14-year-old son taught me recently. His generation more than any other, especially growing up here in Portland, Oregon, is often exposed to this burgeoning spectrum of sexual and gender orientations. It’s become so normal to know people who are oriented differently, the young generation has become comfortable with this norm. They don’t take it for granted, though. My son has shared that he and his friends have deep conversations about these shifts in our culture like, "what is the masculine and feminine anyway? Where do the associations come from? Is it purely cultura and environmental?”

The definition of “gender fluid” from urbandictionary.com is this:

“Gender Fluid is a gender identity best described as a dynamic mix of boy and girl. A person who is Gender Fluid may always feel like a mix of the two traditional genders, but may feel more boy some days, and more girl other days. Being Gender Fluid has nothing to do with which set of genitalia one has, nor their sexual orientation.”

It’s interesting to reflect upon how the roles of men and women have changed so much in the past 50 years and how we’ve been redefining what the two genders are all about. This questioning and seeking seems to be reflected in the myriad of gender and sexual orientations. If both men and women can truly do just about anything without their gender being a hindrance, then we can also be free to love whomever we want, however we want, and embrace femininity and masculinity as we so choose.

This questioning has also helped lead us to the realization that masculine principles have been dominating our culture (and so many other major cultures) for so long, it has created an unhealthy imbalance in the world. If you haven’t already noticed, take a look around and you’ll start seeing, hearing and feeling the divine feminine creeping back into our lives. According to hashtracking.com, just today on Twitter there were over 1,500 tweets with the hashtag #divinefeminine, exposing almost 300,000 people to the term. On Instagram today, there were over 200 “#divinefeminine posts reaching 300,000 people. Even the CostCo magazine is posting articles about looking inward, feeling connected and trusting your intuition! These are all very feminine traits. Red tents like the ones we host are popping up all over the world. They are a direct manifestation of women intentionally bringing more of the feminine into their lives.

The sacred feminine has been pent up for so long, the dam holding it back is beginning to burst. Soon, she will gush out and this planet is going to sound, look and feel a lot different. It’s an exciting time to be a woman on the planet and tapped into this zeitgeist of our time.

Our Aphrodite May Red Tent

Aphrodite is the juiciest goddess, representing beauty, love, sensuality, passion, procreation, union and creativity.  She is quintessentially the most feminine of the goddesses and perfect for calling in to a red tent. For our May Red Tent we did just that. We celebrated and honored this Greek goddess, also known as Venus to the Romans.

After calling in the directions to create sacred space in the circle, Kelly led us in a seated meditation where, with outstretched legs, we swung our feet from side to side so that it opened our hips more. After some quiet inward meditation, we sang the song, “The Earth, The Water, The Fire,The Air.” It was a good way to remember our elements!

Each woman brought a single flower for the altar to reflect Aphrodite’s beauty. And the altar sure did look beautiful!

For activities to invoke and celebrate Aphrodite, we focused on experiencing each of our senses. For hearing, Kelly gonged her crystal bowl. It was so powerful, I could feel the sound waves traveling right through my body! Not only was it an exquisite sound, it touched on the feeling sense, too. We passed around different essential oils to smell, then we passed around special elixirs to taste:  one was a chocolate flavor called “Passion,” and one was called “Aphrodite’s Syrup.” Both made by Terra Firma Botanicals, they were yummy and quite interesting. Finally we gave each other hand massages for the sense of touch.

The direction South is associated with the element fire and qualities such as passion, spontaneity and creativity – all very Aphrodite like. A woman in the circle surprised and delighted us with an exquisite, special Buddhist dance that reflected the beauty of Aphrodite with intentional, holy, soft and fluid moves. The dance and spontaneity itself seemed to go right with the Aphrodite theme.

For sharing, we went around the circle recounting the stories of our very first experience of mutual, intense attraction. It seemed to have stirred up all sorts of emotions and lots of giggles.

We had our first menarche maiden to celebrate and honor! She sat in the circle and we showered her with blessings and gifts. It was sweet and I think she really enjoyed it.

Tracy and Kelli from Glad Rags joined in and gifted us with beautiful reusable cloth panty liners!

Evolution of our Red Tent Events:

The ceremony was so full that it lasted an hour and a half. I received feedback that it was too long. With 27 women and 2 minutes of sharing per person, that’s an hour right there. A solution has been proposed that only those of us who really want to share during the sharing part would do so. That would definitely cut some time! I’m also going to have women with services to offer set up at the beginning of the evening as well as the end. Some women can’t stay past the circle and miss out.

The June Red Tent will be on the 27th in SomaSpace and we’ll be honoring another goddess. Can you guess who it will be? Here’s a hint: she’s fierce and independent. Hope to see you there!
