I decided to create a scholarship fund for financially challenged women who feel like they can’t afford a ticket to our Red Tents, but would really like to be there. The Goddess Swim was our first fundraiser.
It was a perfect August night. The sky was clear and the stars came out. Unfortunately, the moon hadn’t risen over the horizon yet, but we sure felt its loveliness. We were lucky it was warm enough so there was no excuse not to jump into the pool! Most of the time in Portland, it cools down on summer evenings. The pool water was the perfect temperature. The water felt silky smooth and healing. I noticed the healing effect of floating in the pool, how it is a form of release. When you float, you let all the muscles in your body relax and it’s like you’re letting the Mother support you. It’s a great meditation.
I read recently that oxytocin levels (the feel-good hormone) rises when women are around each other. I think we definitely felt that. It was so great to just hang out with a bunch of women, let loose, be more of ourselves and not be so concerned with how our hair, makeup or bodies looked.
Clothing was optional, but most of us waited until it was dark to skinny dip. “Skinny dip!” OMG, that is an interesting euphemism! I’m going to have to look that one up.
The Bloody Marys I made were a big hit. I loved the idea of serving Bloody Marys as they seem so perfect for celebrating women’s monthly cycles. We had a great turnout and raised enough money for 16 women to attend our Red Tents! I am so grateful to those who came out to support the cause and have fun! A big thank you to all who attended and contributed.
